Good tidings at Christmastime

Christmastime and New Year make us stop, give us time, precious time to reflect on the past year and what may lay ahead in 2010. Reflections, analysis and dreams are woven together.

The Baltic Sea Commission can look back on 2009 with pride. The Baltic Sea Strategy was adopted by the EU Parliament and money for its implementation has been earmarked in the budget. We have been active in formulating the actions in the Baltic Sea Strategy and can now look forward towards regional cooperation in implementing the concrete actions of the strategy.

Over the year, we have enjoyed excellent cooperation with our mother organisation, the CPMR and our fellow commissions (Atlantic Arc, Balkan and Black Sea, Islands, Intermediterranean and the North Sea Commission). This cooperation constitutes the foundation of our work. As an additional bonus we are also happy to acknowledge that we are continuing our close cooperation with other organisations - primarily around the Baltic Sea - such as BSSSC, B7 Baltic Islands Network, Euroregion Baltic, Baltic Development Forum, UBC – Union of the Baltic Cities, CBSS, HELCOM, Baltic 21, Inter Baltic and others.

We are now looking forward to the New Year. Several decisions which are important to our regions will be made in the EU Parliament; territorial cohesion, EU2020 to mention a few, and  planning for the EU post 2013 is in preparation. At the Baltic Sea Commission’s General Assembly in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany, on  27-28 May 2010, we shall decide what focus we shall have for the coming year and my guess is that territorial cohesion will be one important topic for us. The regions shall also be actively involved in the development of Europe.

Our heartfelt thanks to you all for your good work in an atmosphere of cooperation that has brought fine results and that we can continue to use in building our future work.

The Baltic Sea Commission wish you all a peaceful Christmas and New Year season and an inspiring 2010.
